6th Class
Mr. McNamara's 6th Class - April
6th Class had a fascinating excursion to Kilmainham during the month of April. We attended a tour of the historic Kilmainham Gaol, which fit in perfectly with our inquiry unit of Irish History. The boy learned not only about the history of the Gaol but the history of Ireland and the foundation of the country that we live in today. We also got to enjoy the sunshine and had our lunch in the grounds of IMMA, Royal Hospital Kilmainham. It was a fantastic day out and the boys were excellently well behaved as we travelled across the city.

Mr. Mooney's 6th Class - April
April was an extremely fun and educational month in 6th class. We visited Kilmainham Gaol on the 9th of April which was a fantastic experience. The boys were taken through the different parts of the gaol and the many stories from the gaols history were shared with them. This brought our learning about the 1916 Rising to life and was a trip to remember for the boys and their teacher! Back in the classroom, we worked on a super Maths problem which involved the boys budgeting for a holiday. We had to choose what location to stay in, what food to buy and what equipment to bring with us all whilst staying under budget! It was fun to see Maths come to life in this real-world problem!

Mr. McNamara's 6th Class - March
This month, 6th Class were lucky enough to attend the ESB Science Blast. In class, we have been exploring the theme of “Food” which fit in perfectly with our inquiry question of “Are we getting value for money in the food that we purchase?”. As the class had researched this question in class through a range of experiments, we learned that we are being tricked or fooled by many brands, and are not getting value for money in the food that we purchase. The day in RDS Simmonscourt was enjoyable from start to finish. We got a chance to meet other schools and see what questions they researched, while also getting to see some highly entertaining and educational shows. Well done to the boys on receiving such excellent feedback from our judge about the real-life science that they carried out!

Mr. Mooney's 6th Class - March
March has been a busy and enjoyable month in 6th class! At the start of the month, we entered ‘ESB Science Blast’ in the RDS with our project ‘Does doing a warm-up improve your performance in a skills test’. The boys presented their project brilliantly and really impressed the judges! It was great to see the boys be rewarded with a trophy for all their hard work! Well done boys!

Lots of fun activities in the classroom have also taken place this month! To celebrate ‘Pancake Tuesday’ we treated ourselves to some much-deserved pancakes to celebrate! We also welcomed 1st class up to the senior corridor for an afternoon of shared reading and it was great to see the boys being so kind to their younger peers! This month has been particularly busy as we have also been hard at work entering the ‘An Post’ writing competition which allowed the boys to discuss ways we can make our communities better and more sustainable in the future. The boys came up with some excellent ideas and no doubt our community is in safe hands in the future!

Mr. McNamara's 6th Class - February
February has been a great and productive month for 6th Class. We have been exploring the theme of “Food” across a range of subject areas, and mainly, we have been researching the question “Are we getting value for money in the food that we purchase?” which we will present at ESB Science Blast next month. We’ve been exploring Shrinkflation and explored this question in a fun and interesting way. One of the fun experiments that we completed was using our taste buds to compare Iconic Brands of Foods vs. Knock Off Brands of Foods (for example, Tayto vs. Lidl Brand Spuddys). The results were really interesting and the boys really enjoyed researching this topic and analysing the data that they collected.

Mr. Mooney's 6th Class - February
We have had a fun and exciting month of February! Over the past few weeks, we have been busy finding the answer to our Science Blast Question ‘Does doing a warm-up activity improve your performance in a skills test’. The boys have been working hard trying to find the answer to this question and we look forward to sharing our results at Science Blast in the RDS next month! During the month, we also hosted our eagerly awaited Dragon’s Den session! The boys spent weeks designing a brand new product and working on their pitch. Each boy then got a chance to pitch their product and other boys could invest using raffle tickets! We had great fun designing and pitching our new products to each other!

Mr. McNamara's 6th Class - January
We had a great day celebrating Grandparents Day in our school. The boys welcomed their grandparents into their classroom and we spent some time showing them what school is like nowadays. We taught them some Maths Games that we learned and played in class. The boys had a great day and loved showing their grandparents around the school and classroom.

Mr. Mooney's 6th Class - January
January has been a fun month in 6th class as we settled in after the Christmas Break. The boys completed our A-Z of Killester which is displayed outside our classroom. This takes you through different features of life in Killester for each letter of the alphabet. The boys worked super hard at this project and they should be very proud of their effort! In English, the boys were busy designing a new product for our own version of Dragon’s Den! The boys had to spot a problem that exists in the world and design a product to fix that problem! We had some super ideas for new inventions and no doubt there are many boys in Room 8 who will be future entrepreneurs! This month, we are preparing for St. Brigid’s Day! The boys have been busy making St. Brigid’s crosses in preparation for the special day!

November blurb November has been a very busy month once again in 6th class. In Maths, the boys were hard at work experimenting with triangular numbers to solve different word problems. They used cubes to test different ideas and to justify our answers. Well done boys! Our A-Z booklet of Killester is almost finished! The boys have been working hard at finding something in the local area for each letter of the alphabet. We have also started a Google Earth project to accompany our A-Z Booklet. Keep an eye out for the finished booklet in next month’s update.

Maths week also took place from 14th to the 18th of October. Inside the classroom, we completed lots of fun solving problem tasks, such as ‘The Bridge Crossing Problem’ and ‘The Pyramid Problem’. The boys found lots of excellent solutions to these problems! As our maths topic for the week was Data, we decided to create trend graphs and bar charts comparing the careers of some of our favourite footballers such as Ronaldo, Messi and Haaland! Well done boys on such great Maths work!
6th class also were responsible for helping out with the ‘Maths Carnival’ held within the school during Maths week. The boys worked in pairs at each stall and were responsible for running their own stall.
